The Evo X is the Last Evolution

A mixed collection of comments have surfaced on blogs and forums ever since Gayu Eusegi, Mitsubishi’s Global Product Director, made several statements leading to the conclusion that the Evolution Generation X, will be the last of its kind. The Last Unicorn, the Last Airbender, the Last of the Mohican’s…

Eusegi said the current Evo X will be the final generation, telling Autocar: “There is still a demand (for the car), but we must stop.”

Mitsubishi has not taken part in the World Rally Championships in quite some time, so in a sense, they have been slowly inching their way out of the performance market for several years. In addition, the Evo only found a driveway among 2,046 homes last year, which isn’t too encouraging for the manufacturer to continue its production.

“Our influence now is EV technology,” confirmed Eusegi.

In the Evo’s place, Mitsubishi will be putting the majority of their eggs into the electric car market, such as the iMiEV. According to Edmund’s Inside Line, the EVO will remain in the Mitsubishi lineup for another three years (through 2013), but behyond that, Eusegi declined to comment.

In addition to axing the Evo; the Eclipse, Endeavor, and Galant will also most likely be saying their fond farewell’s to make room for another six electric vehicles to be added to the Mitsubishi lineup by the year 2015.

AutoEvolution has started a Facebook page to “Save Ferris”, or rather Save the Evo, by convincing Mitsubishi there is still a following for their race-inspired consumer car. Eusegi commented on these concerns by adding, “Maybe the world can change, and maybe someday we can do a motor race by electric vehicles—Maybe then we can enter the market again.”
